Affordable Housing Comes to South Columbus

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Willie Mae German has lived in Columbus her entire life and like many, has fallen on hard times.

"I had a foreclosure on my home and I had no place to go," she said.

Now, she's found a home in the Avalon Apartments, a new affordable complex on Cusseta Road.

Columbus officials and investor marked the grand opening of the $24 million project Thursday.

Its developers are banking on the growth that's expected to come from Base Realignment And Closure but the units are already filling up fast.

"The rent is restricted but it's also income restricted. The resident pretty much have to stay below 60% of the area median income and they qualify based on their household size- whether it's a one person household to a four or five person household," explained Eddy Benoit, President of Ambling Development Partners.

With 1,2,3, and 4 bedrooms units ranging from the low $400s to $700 per month, developers say some of their new residents are folks who've been displaced out of Baker Village- another revitalization project that's now called Arbor Pointe.

"They're going through a phasing process as far as the redevelopment of Baker Village so all those residents aren't able to get relocated immediately into Baker Village so they're pretty scattered throughout Columbus. But with us being able to open up a lot sooner than the first phase of Baker Village that really has allowed folks that have been living in Columbus South to remain in Columbus South," Benoit added.

Like Willie Mae German.

"I spotted this beautiful place. I said, Lord, I would like to live there and He made a way for me to live here and I appreciate it and I love it," she said.

Out of the 232 units at Avalon Apartments, half are already taken.

Developers expect this complex to be full in the next few months.

If you're interested, you can go to the complex at 3737 Cusseta road to fill out an application or call the leasing information center at 1-888-807-0666.

For information on Arbor Pointe, formally Baker Village, you can call 706-685-0777.
