SMITHS STATION, AL (WTVM) - News Leader 9 has learned a Fort Benning soldier is behind bars for allegedly abusing a baby.

Investigators arrested 22-year-old Joseph Depalma of Smiths Station and charged him with aggravated child abuse. We're told he was indicted back on June 29th after a three-week-old baby was taken to Doctor's Hospital in Columbus, Georgia by her parents.

According to the parents, the baby was not eating. An examination found that the baby was suffering from intracranial hemorrhage or bleeding in the skull.

The baby was then transferred to Columbus Regional for additional treatment.

Depalma is currently being held at the Lee County Detention Facility on a $30,000 bond.

We're told the baby has been released from the hospital and is in the care of the mother.
