Ft. Benning awarded $32 Million for construction

Press Release

FORT BENNING, GA - As Fort Benning, Ga., continues its transformation to accommodate the Fort Knox Armor School by Sept. 2011, the Savannah District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues to award contracts for new military construction there.

On July 31, the Savannah District awarded a $32.5 million contract for a Vehicle Maintenance Instruction Facility to Carothers Construction, Inc. of Oxford, Miss. The contract includes the design and construction of a 185,000-square-foot facility, where Soldiers of the Armor School will receive hands-on maintenance training with various defense vehicles. The facility is primarily designed for maintenance instruction on the M1 Abrams family of tanks, but it will also include areas for similar smaller vehicles.

The contract also includes the construction of 4.1 acres of vehicle parking, a 120-square-foot security building and all supporting site preparation and infrastructure for a 110,000-square foot General Instruction Building. Construction will span 450 calendar days.

Like all Army construction projects, the Vehicle Maintenance Instruction Facility has been designed to achieve a minimum Silver rating from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council standards.
