COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Summer is almost over and in two days school begins. But for teachers preparing their classrooms has already begun. News Leader Nine caught up with one teacher gearing up for the first day of school.

Second grade teacher Emily Brannan said, "No matter how long you've been teaching, you still get the first day jitters. Even though you feel more confident every year it's still nerve-racking. You still have a hard time sleeping the night before the school year starts, but it's definitely fun."

Students may not be getting their backpacks ready for another few days, but teachers in Muscogee County are already hitting the classrooms.

"It's kind of a nice welcome back for us because we get back in the swing of things before we have students. It's a time for us to get our classrooms ready and get copies made and bulletin boards hung before the kids get here.," said Brannan.

Mrs. Brannan says she's spent a lot of time and money getting ready for the new school year, "I have no problem spending my own money getting my classroom ready because it's fun and colorful stuff and I get to pick out what I want."

She's been teaching for three years now and says her first year out of college she spent nearly one-thousand dollars of her own money for supplies, "I didn't have to worry about rent or a house payment and I was able to devote most of my money and even a few of my first paychecks to pay for classroom stuff." But does she thinks the money was worth is? "Definitely, because each year it gets less and less."

Once she gets everything set, Brannan says she's eager to meet her new students, "I know a few students just from my responsibilities last year but a lot of students I met the last day of school when they toured the classroom but I'm getting to know them all over again."

Muscogee County schools start Thursday and most private schools start next week.
