Ft. Benning to honor National Airborne Day

Press Release

FORT BENNING, GA - The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment will commemorate the 69th anniversary of the Parachute Infantry and the original airborne test platoon's first jump at 9 a.m. Aug 14 during National Airborne Day on the Airborne Walk.

The ceremony will be conducted in conjunction with a basic airborne class graduation and will open with a demonstration by the post's parachute exhibition team, the Silver Wings.

Two officers and 48 enlisted men were selected from a pool of 200 volunteers to form the original airborne test platoon in July 1940, after the War Department directed the Infantry School to organize a test platoon of volunteers.

The platoon made its first jumps Aug. 16, 1940, over Lawson Airfield, barely six weeks after being formed.  One month after the test platoon's first jump, the 501st Parachute Infantry Battalion was organized.
