COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Muscogee County School officials believe a penny can go a long way.

The school district is leaving it up to residents of Columbus to provide that penny by voting yes to SPLOST. "When you're talking about 4,000 additional students coming to Muscogee County because of BRAC, and that's hundreds of classrooms," said Dr. Susan Andrews, "We have no other funding source to get this money except with SPLOST".

The district has a list of SPLOST projects including a new Carver High School, a new gymnasium for Fort Middle School, and upgrade for the Jordan Auditorium -- the district wants every gym to have air conditioning.

Then there are the budget cuts are expected to come this fiscal year. Muscogee County teachers will be taking three furlough days and the state may require the district to take three more.

Andrews wants each voter to keep the students in the forefronts of their mind when casting their vote. "This vote is about the children and the future of public education and what does this community want for their children. That' what this is all about," said Andrews.
