Eufaula Soldier Laid to Rest

EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) - A tearful crowd packed The Eufaula Church of God Saturday. Some folks even stood outside to pay their respects to the family of fallen Sergeant Jerry Evans Junior.

"We're here today because of a sacrifice that a brave young man was willing to make," said Evan's pastor, Steven Smith.

The 23-year-old East Alabama native was killed in Afghanistan last week when an explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

Those who knew Jerry say he always felt the need to serve his country.

"He wanted to be a part of something and now you can clearly see that even though it cost him everything, he played a big part. He's definitely a local hero," Stevens said.

A hero and a soldier in every sense of the word.

Even when he was home on leave, Jerry's pastor remembers him saying he had to go back overseas to help ensure his comrades made it home safely.

He says the young sergeant's death was not vain.

"It might have been lost but it wasn't for a lost cause. It was truly something he believed in and he was willing to make that sacrifice," he added.

Evans was laid to rest at Fort Mitchell National Cemetery in the company of so many who made the same sacrifice.

Lives that are gone but never forgotten.
