Two shot, one killed in Americus gunfight

AMERICUS, GA (WTVM) - An exchange of gunfire turned deadly late Thursday night.

Several rounds were fired along a block of Cherokee Street striking two men, one of them fatally.

Police blocked parts of Cherokee Street as GBI agents collected evidence from the street where the shooting went down.

It was here where 19-year-old Courtney Jones and 25-year-old Gilbert Brown were shot inside an S-U-V.

When police arrived, Jones was dead in the driver's seat, and Brown was taken by EMS to a hospital.

"I just heard some gunshots. It sounded like grenades," said Oscar Lester, who witnessed the gunfight.

Police now say the shooting was a result of a robbery gone bad, after several men ambushed the SUV that carried Jones, Brown and another man, Cornelius Lewis.

The shocker-- police believe that the gunshots to Jones and Brown came from Lewis, who was in the passenger seat of the car.

They don't know if the shots were on purpose, or by accident, if he was aiming at the other men outside.

Lewis has been arrested, but is only being charged with aggravated assault at this hour, although police say more charges are on the way.

Police are also looking for five or six suspects believed to have ambushed the SUV.

Gilbert Brown is listed in stable condition at Phoebe Sumter Hospital, after undergoing surgery on the gunshot wounds to his stomach and thigh.

This is the second homicide in Americus this year.
