94, 96 Honda Accord the most stolen vehicles in GA and AL

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The 1994 Honda Accord and the 1994 Honda Civic were the most stolen vehicles in the state of Georgia. -- that's according to the Hot Wheels 2009 study by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB).

Thieves are targeting a wide range of vehicles - but only certain models of older cars and trucks.

The most commonly stolen vehicles in Georgia for 2008:

1.      1994 Honda Accord
2.      1994 Honda Civic
3.      2004 Ford F150 Series Pickup Truck     
4.      1994 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
5.      1990 Chevrolet 4X2 Pickup
6.      1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass
7.      2002 Ford Explorer
8.      2000 Dodge Caravan
9.      1999 Ford Taurus
10.     1997 Toyota Camry

In Alabama, the 1996 Honda Accord was the most stolen car in 2008. Pickup trucks ranked second and third among the most stolen in the same study.

The 2008 numbers show the 1989 Chevy Conventional cab 4X2 was the second most stolen vehicle in the state followed by the 1998 Ford 150 pickup.

2008:

1.      1996 Honda Accord
2.      1994 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 Pickup
3.      1997 Ford F150 Series Pickup Truck     
4.      1989 Chevrolet Caprice
5.      2000 Honda Civic
6.      1994 Jeep Cherokee/Grand Cherokee
7.      1999 Ford Taurus
8.      1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass
9.      2004 Dodge Ram Pickup
10.     1994 Toyota Camry

According to the NICB, the parts can be stripped from a car at a chop shop and sold for at least twice as much as the value of the vehicle on the used car market.
Newer model vehicles are typically more difficult to steal due to anti-theft technology.

According to the Hot Spot 2009 study by the NICB, the Columbus-Metro area ranked 22nd in the nation -- making this area the hottest spot for auto thefts in both Alabama and Georgia.

The Columbus Metropolitan area includes Muscogee, Marion, Chattahoochee, Harris, and Russell Counties. The metro area's auto theft rate is 555 vehicles per 100,000.
