Reese Road Elementary gets more "uniform" look

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Uniforms at some Muscogee County Schools have been around for years and now others are hopping on the bandwagon. News Leader Nine looks at the benefits for schools where students are dressing alike.

It's almost a month after the start of the school year and Reese Road Elementary now has a more uniform look.

5th grade student Jasmyne Jones said, "I thought everybody looked like clones when we came in."

But her classmate Marlisa Scott likes the change, "It's fun because people judge you by what you wear and now everybody is wearing the same thing."

Administration says the uniform is part of the magnet program and will have many benefits.

"The goal for this is not discipline, we don't have major discipline problems at Reese. This is just a part of making us standardized and uniform so we can focus on learning," Reese Road Elementary School Principal Jeanella Pendleton told News Leader Nine.

Across town at Clubview Elementary, students have been wearing uniforms for more than 12 years.

Principal Adele Lindsey said, "Some students love it, some students want to wear original outfits, but for the most part they've gotten used to it and they see the benefits."

Bailey Richburg is in 4th grade at Clubview and enjoys the uniforms, "We got it all figured out. We have school clothes in our closet and it's easier to get blue pants and other stuff instead of complicated clothes."

Sarah Holden agreed, "They can just know what you're going to have to wear and just get it out yourself."

Principal Lindsey has a few words of advice for those new to uniforms, "It helps their academic progress in school, it helps them feel more comfortable and safe. I think they'll love it and I hope more schools go that way."

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
