Columbus moves forward with Victory Dr. overlay project

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Members of the South Columbus Concerned Citizens say it's time city council create an overlay district along Victory Drive, South Lumpkin Road and parts of Fort Benning Road to help put that part of town on par with other areas.

The overlay would require new businesses to make additional improvements.

"Our objective here is to establish a level playing field for everyone and so we can bring the quality of life up substantially by the aesthetic quality. It's not changing what they have down there. It's just simply saying if you build something new down there or if you're going to expand by more than fifty percent you have to meet certain criteria. Most of that criteria is going to be landscaping and how you deal with parking, things of that nature," explained Planning Director, Rick Jones.

"They're coming through South Columbus. This is what they see. They can enter at either South Lumpkin Road or Benning Boulevard and we want to make a good impression. I'd certainly like to live to see Victory Drive become the vibrant, commercial corridor it was in the past. This is the window," said Owen Ditchfield, President of the South Columbus Concerned Citizens.

Even though the ordinance does make provisions for car dealerships, Jason Gregory of Carl Gregory Enterprises says he can't yet get behind it.

"We're all for beautifying Columbus and Victory Drive. I feel like the city's made good steps towards making that happen but we feel like if they would go back and enforce what they have already on the books it would be better for everyone," he added.

There is an overlay on Veteran's Parkway from Moon Road to the county line and another on Highway 80/Beaver Run Road.

The Victory Drive Overlay Ordinance will go before council again in two weeks for a second reading.

At that meeting, a public hearing will also be held.
