New Wachovia Bigger and Greener

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) - Midtown growth is starting to pick-up again with the opening of a brand new Wachovia bank on Macon Road. The Cross Country Plaza Wachovia bank opened its doors Thursday morning, and already company officials are projecting it to be the largest transaction store in the state of Georgia.

After months of construction and planning, the Wachovia Bank held its grand opening for the new location on Macon Road.

Community Bank President Chad Gregory told Fox 54, "We've outgrown two facilities, to be able to have a new store inside this market with growth potential over the next couple years."

The spacious building and the more efficient drive-thru's have customers celebrating the opening.

Wachovia's all over the country are changing the way they are built and this 4,500 square foot bank was built with the environment in mind.

"As we review those, maybe additional features will be added. We're trying to concentrate on the go forward model with all new branches to get them as green as possible. Our energy-efficient light-fixtures, certain recyclable things around like flooring, ceilings and aspects of our building are going green," said Gregory.

Not only is Wachovia bringing speed and an environmentally friendly workspace, but Gregory says they are offering much needed jobs, "We just hired about 15 employees over the past 60 days, we're hiring another 5 to 7 in the next 30 days. Right now with so many companies having tough times, the fact that we're going green and building facilities, we're proud of that."

The new location is replacing the two Wachovia banks on Auburn Avenue and Wynnton Road -- which closed their doors Thursday.

The Wachovia at Cross Country Plaza has nine tellers, five drive-thru lanes and two outside ATM's to better serve the customers.

The new hours aren't much different from the old locations: Monday through Thursday they are open from 9 to 5, Fridays 9 to 6 and Saturday the bank will open from 9 to noon.
