OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -  A 26-year-old Salem woman is dead after her car collided with a tractor-trailer on Interstate 85.

Authorities say Shanquetta Jana Sanks was driving south on the interstate Friday when she apparently lost control of her vehicle and crossed the median into the path of the 18 wheeler on the northbound lanes near mile marker 59 in Opelika.

The Jaws of Life had to be used to get Sanks out of her 2006 Mazda and she was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center where she died a short time later from her injuries.

The driver of the 18 wheeler was not injured in the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by the Opelika Police and the Lee County Coroner.

The fatal accident shut down the interstate in both directions for several hours.
