BARBOUR COUNTY, AL (WTVM) - Barbour County authorities tell News Leader 9 a 13-year-old was accidentally shot over the weekend.

Sunday, just before Noon, the teen was at home playing video games with friends. While the  grandmother was in the bedroom, an 11-year-old friend started playing with a .22 caliber rifle.

The weapon discharged and struck the teen in the left side of the face. The bullet traveled through his neck and into his right shoulder.

We're told the teen was taken to Dale Medical Center in Ozark, AL and later flown to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, AL where he underwent a couple of surgeries.

The incident is being investigated by Morris and the Alabama Department of Human Resources and will be turned over the District Attorney's office and Juvenile Court Services.

The Barbour County Sheriff's Office wants to stress to parents and adults the importance of locking all weapons in a secure place. The department tells us it offers free gun locks for all types of weapons. The locks can be picked up at the sheriff's office located at the county jail and at the Clayton Courthouse.
