Fort Benning to host 5th annual Combatives Championship

FORT BENNING - Soldiers from around the Army will fight hand-to-hand to earn first place during the fifth annual U.S. Army Combatives Championship, which will be conducted at Fort Benning's Smith Fitness Center on Dixie Road Sept. 18-20. 

The opening ceremony will be Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. with remarks from Maj. Gen. Michael Ferriter who will be available to speak with media at approximately 9:15 a.m. 

Preliminary matches will start at 9 a.m. Sept. 18 and Sept. 19.  Final matches will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 20.  Approximately 300 Soldiers from around the world are expected to compete, and prizes will be given to all first, second and third place winners.

Combatives instructors will perform demonstrations during intermissions.  Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders will also be on hand to sign autographs and meet Soldiers and their families Sept. 18 from 1 to 3 p.m.  Hockey players from the Columbus Cottonmouths will sign autographs beginning at 2 p.m. Sept. 20.

Modern Combatives is a functional, mixed martial art form combining Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing, clinch hitting, takedowns and ground-fighting techniques. Combatives also employs techniques borrowed from judo, kick boxing and Greco-roman wrestling.

This event is open to the public.  Parking will be available at the Smith Fitness Center.  Spillover parking will be available on Way Avenue, past the fitness center on Dixie Road, with shuttle service for spectators and gym patrons.
