Community to Remember First Black Surgeon

COLUMBUS (WXTX) -  A man who played a pioneering role in Columbus medicine and in the community will be laid to rest on Saturday.

Family members and dignitaries in medicine will honor the life of Dr. M. Delmar Edwards at the St. Mary's Road United Methodist Church located at 3993 St. Mary's Road in Columbus.

Dr. Edwards was Columbus' first black surgeon. He helped close racial gaps by recruiting numerous black physicians to practice in middle Georgia.

Edwards was also the first black member of the Columbus Rotary Club, a long-serving member of Columbus State University Foundation Board, and a member of the Board of Directors of AFLAC.
