COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Jessica Thornton says she wants closure after her father's mysterious death but she has not found any.

50-year-old Dansby Thornton, was found lying in the street near the Raceway Gas Station on Victory Drive in the early morning hours of September 2nd.

"He was left in the middle of the street on Victory Drive which is a very busy street," she said.

He died a short time later at the hospital.

That area is Fort Benning's jurisdiction so the Army's Criminal Investigation Division has been handling the case.

Officials are releasing very few details but tell Channel 9 that Thornton died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Family members say he wasn't affiliated with the Army and don't know what he was doing there.

"He was in a fight for his life that night. He had scars all over his hands, he had bite marks in his lips and he did have bruising on his head," said his daughter.

With so many unanswered questions surrounding his death, Dansby's family is asking anyone with information to contact authorities. His daughter says she knows someone out there saw something that would help the investigation.

"I don't know what happened and that's not the type of lifestyle my father had. He never regretted anything he did and he never lied about anything he did so for this to happen so mysteriously like this is beyond me. It's like a movie almost," Jessica said.

She has a special message for the man she was told pulled over to help her father and who called police.

"I would like to give you a hug and a kiss and thank you for being with my father in his last moments."

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.

You can call 706-545-5222 or 706-545-0220 to reach the Fort Benning Military Police and the Army CID.
