COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  A fallen soldier from Columbus was laid to rest Saturday.

Services for Gunnery Sergeant Edwin Johnson were held at Wynnton Hill Baptist Church.

The 32-year-old Marine and father of three was killed in action September 8th in Afghanistan.

A graduate of Columbus High, he was assigned to the 3rd Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division and stationed in Okinawa, Japan.

His funeral brought out some who didn't even know him but wanted to pay their respect for his service.

"Just for that split second they see all of us strangers and flags. From the time they pull up to the church just that second it takes the pain away. We care. Strangers care. He is not a forgotten fallen soldier," Todd Moyer, a Patriot Guard rider.

Gunnery Sergeant Johnson served almost 13 years in the Marine Corps, with stints in Japan and Korea before being deployed to Afghanistan.

The decorated soldier was awarded the Purple Heart after his death.

He was buried at Green Acres Cemetery on Schatulga Road.
