OPELIKA, GA (WTVM) - A multi-million dollar facility opens in Opelika, bringing state of the art facilities to east Alabama.

Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller told News Leader Nine, "It's another great day in the life of our community. What a magnificent facility if I do say so myself. It's a dream come true for us and it'll be wonderful for our citizens."

News Leader Nine has been there from the beginning... The groundbreaking, the first walls going up and now the official grand opening of the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center.

Opelika Parks and Recreation Director Bill Harrelson said, "I've been here 37 years and I didn't think I'd see anything like this in Opelika and it's absolutely wonderful."

"It's a great day for us and we're glad to have the ribbon cut and have it officially open," added Mayor Fuller.

Although the center has technically been open for weeks now, officials behind the new facility took the time to dedicate the Sportsplex, weight room, cardiovascular area and the activity center.

Harrelson said, "For three weeks people have been standing in line to become members of this fine facility. We've got people in the building swimming, lifting weights and whatever they want to do."

After more than a year and a half of planning and building, the nearly $30 million facility can now call Opelika home.

"I can't even express my feelings of how great this is going to be for the city of Opelika and our families and our fitness and our quality of life. I can't say enough about what this facility will mean for Opelika," Harrelson told News Leader Nine.
