Russell Co. Commissioners Approve 2010 Budget

September 25, 2009

Russell County, AL (WTVM) -- Russell County employees are due to get a leg up, now that the 2010 budget has been passed.

County commissioners passed the 25 million dollar budget this afternoon.  It includes a 3% pay raise for county employees, except department heads, salaried employees and elected officials.

The budget also freezes all vacant positions except law enforcement and places a cap on capital improvements except the old courthouse renovations. The budget also includes $28,000 for a special election to allow voters to approve or reject the 13-mil tax renewal that benefits Russell County and Phenix City schools.

County administrator Leann Horne says the county has a little over $7 million dollars in their reserves.

She feels the county is in good financial shape, but county commissioners plan to review the approved budget again in March to see if they need to make any modifications.  This is only if the tax revenues are not where they expect them to be.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
