WTVM Columbus- The location of the new Martin Army Community Hospital at Fort Benning is all woods right now. By the end of the year, the land will be cleared to make way for "The Medical Home". Commander Koji Nishimura says that name refers to the state of the art facility process with a focus on providing services to the patient rather than the patient having to travel to the services.
"Patients will have a single waiting room for pharmacy, labatory and x-rays. It allows them to draw a single number and they can wait for all three at one time," says Nishimura. The official name of the hospital will remain the same, Fort Banning Community Hospital. Features that will be different than the existing facility include three main areas: a large in-patient tower, two out-patient buildings and two multi-level parking garages.
The 745,000 square-foot hospital will be located behind the soldier's barracks near Marne Road adjacent to the current hospital. A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to be held by the end of the year. The 330-million-dollar contract was awarded to Turner Construction Company in Huntsville, Alabama Monday afternoon. An estimated completion date is set for the summer of 2013.
