COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  The video of Quitman County Sheriff Deputies and residents involved in what authorities call a full blown riot has been seen all over the news.

Now----a grand jury has indicted the suspects sheriff's officials say attacked deputies.

Dante Billings, Tyrone Billings, Barbara Billings, Bryshaun Smith, Eric Johnson Jr. and Royzell Wilson are being charged with Obstruction Of an Officer.

Sheriff Steve Newton says it took the grand jury 40 minutes to decide there was probable cause.

"They are fair. Anyone who is brave enough to walk up on a traffic stop and attack deputies is a dangerous person and I think they should have to answer the consequences for what they did," says Newton.

Sheriff Newton says it all started during a traffic stop when a deputy was attacked.

Deputies say they were outnumbered when bystanders jumped in.

But those arrested tell a different story.

They say deputies bullied them with illegal and unethical tactics.

The groups attorney, Joseph Wiley says his defendants are being wrongfully accused.

"We look forward to a trial and jury because we think that its an opportunity to prove to the citizens that the Sheriff is wrong in this situation. We think it was citizens responding to unecessary force by the sheriff's department," adds Wiley.
