WEST POINT LAKE, AL (WTVM) - West Point project coordinators took time Thursday to host an event for some special people in the community. News Leader Nine visited West Point Lake to learn more about the 32nd annual Special Day for special people.

More than fifty volunteers and several local companies pitched in to bring fun, food and entertainment to the special guests.

"We bring the management team out here each year. We help with the event, serve drinks, snow cones, we do train rides, anything to help make the event a success," said Matt Flurry, a volunteer with Coca-Cola.

A volunteer from Publix, Kevin Sazama told News Leader Nine, "It's heart-filling. You just feel like you're doing something special for people who don't have the opportunity to do this every day. It gives them the opportunity to enjoy their day."

Nearly 600 mentally and physically handicapped and elderly people enjoyed outdoor activities and the chance to meet other people in their community.

Niki Locke is the activities coordinator with the Stewart Community House. They brought a group of adults to enjoy the day's event and she said, "Just to get them out and show them a good time and hope they enjoy it."

"A lot of administrators are seeing how important it is for those groups to come out here and get to interact with others. It helps to benefit them," added David Barr with West Point Lake.

All the hard work guaranteed everyone had a special day.
