COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Sunday starts National Fire Prevention Week and fire departments all over the country are trying to keep families safe from house fires.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire officials all over the country responded to nearly 1.5 million fires last year. They are hoping to get that number down for 2009.

"We use this as an opportunity to remind people that fire is still a big threat in our communities but there are things you can do to make sure you and your family can be safer from a threat of fire," the Vice-President of Communications for the National Fire Protection Association, Lorraine Carli told News Leader Nine.

Taking small steps around your home like having up-to-date batteries in your smoke detectors, not leaving candles or cigarettes burning and having an escape plan in case of a fire will all help keep your loved ones and your home safe.
