Smiths Station Teacher Dies after Mysterious Illness

SMITHS STATION, AL (WXTX) -  An east Alabama high school is grieving over the loss of one of its own -- Smiths Station High guidance counselor Adonica Ferguson.

School administrators say Ferguson was recovering from an unknown medical condition when she died Tuesday morning.

Tuesday, students and faculty originally planned a benefit for the educator, but the event turned into a memorial service.

"We decided to go ahead with the program because the community needed it and everyone was calling us and asking us to please continue the program because that's what Mrs. Ferguson would want", Veronicia Jackson, Smiths Station teacher.

Students sang in honor of the school counselor.

According to the faculty, doctors still are not sure what caused her death. The guidance counselor was also a track coach who motivated her students in sports just as much as she did in academics.  Back in 2005 her track team won the state championships.

Ferguson leaves behind a husband and two sons.

A fund for Adonica Ferguson has been set up at CB&T banks.
