Consumer Warning: Fake furniture company

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - There's nothing like saving on a good deal, but you'll end up spending more if it's too good to be true.

In fact, there's a strong warning right now for area consumers that may force folks to think twice about their next online purchase.

Imagine getting $1400 furniture for half the price!  That's what surplusfurniture.com claims to offer its customers.

However, officials with the Better Business Bureau say shoppers won't get such a delivery.

"Somebody has created, using very sophisticated technological methods to create an online store and the reason they've done that is basically to steal debit and credit card information from consumers," says local BBB President Leonard Crain.

BBB officials say the store is a fake, simply set up to steal consumers identity, altough it appears to be real.

"In all of that sophistication, they have actually hijacked the address of a legitimate, accredited business in LaGrange, Georgia," explains Crain.

Crain says Surplus Furniture is using the address for Ashley Furniture Home Store in LaGrange.

He also says whoever is responsible even managed to get a BBB logo on the site. Crain says that too is phony.

Crain says his office is working with officials to have the site removed from the web.           Meanwhile, if you, or someone you know has already bought furniture through Surplus, Crain offers some advice.

"You need to get your bank card issuer, advise them of the activity and have them cancel the charges."

Crain says this also serves as a warning for all online shoppers to do more homework and double check contact information.
