Orly Taitz Sanctioned

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WXTX) -- U.S. District Judge Clay Land has ordered Orly Taitz, a California attorney, to pay a $20,000 penalty for her misconduct stemming from a case in which a soldier  fought deployment orders based on her belief that President Obama is not a U.S. citizen.

Last month, Captain Connie Rhodes lost her court battle and before being deployed to Iraq, she wrote a letter to Judge Land stating that her former lawyer, Orly Taitz, had filed an appeal without the her authorization.

Judge Land gave Taitz two weeks to show why she should not be fined $10,000 for misconduct.

"The court finds that a monetary penalty of $20,000 shall be imposed upon counsel Orly Taitz as punishment for her misconduct, as a deterrent to prevent future misconduct, and to protect the intergrity of the court," Judge Land wrote in today's order filed in District Court.

"When a lawyer files complaints and motions without reasonable basis for believing that they are supported by existing law or a modification or extension of existing law, that lawyer abuses her privilege to practice law. The conduct of counsel Orly Taitz has crossed these lines, and Ms. Taitz must be sanctioned for her misconduct."

Taitz has been given 30 days to pay the fine.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
