AL residents can dial 211 to get info on H1N1

Press Release

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Alabama Department of Public Health entered a partnership with 211 Connects Alabama, and 211 call centers across the state are participating to ensure everyone in Alabama gets accurate timely information about the H1N1 flu virus.

The information and referral service hopes to help relieve some of the heavy phone traffic the state health department has received during the last several weeks by offering a second agency for people to call.

"211 Connects Alabama is committed to increasing access to public health information in the state and providing the public with valuable information about health services and resources for everyday needs as well as in times of crisis." says Becky Booker, Executive Director of the United Ways of Alabama.

The information 211 will provide includes 10 things to do to fight H1N1 and the flu, as well as lists of effective cleaners to use on various surfaces to prevent the spread of the virus.

As soon as the department releases information about where vaccines will be administered, Booker said the 211 office will provide that as well.

Booker said, "All anyone has to do is dial 2-1-1, and it should work."

Booker said some phone systems may not allow 211 calls, but people can also dial toll free 1-888-4-211CONNECTS to speak with a 211 call specialist.

211 Connects Alabama strives to empower those in need by providing easy access and connection to available health and human services.  So far this year, over 85,000 calls have been handled.
