Valley Rescue Mission requests donations

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The Valley Rescue Mission of Columbus says its food pantry is almost empty and it is running out of food for the less fortunate.

The charity is asking the public's assistance in donating nonperishable food items.

It says each month the non-profit gives away more than 300 bags through its food pantry.  So far this year,  it's given 2,800 bags.

As a result of the slumping economy, the number of needy families is growing.

Valley Rescue Mission says many families with children cannot make ends meet because of joblessness, rising food and energy costs, illness, tragedies and poverty.
