Groundbreaking at Roosevelt School

WARM SPRINGS, GA (WXTX) - Ground broke on a new state-of-the-art facility at the Roosevelt School in Warm Springs. With this news comes space for more students and jobs for more residents.

A 70,000 square foot dormitory will soon be part of the campus at the Roosevelt School at Warm Springs. The facility will cost $20 million to build.

Georgia Department of Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond told Fox 54, "Governor Sonny Purdue put up the first $10 million in bond money that we were able to match on a federal level to generate funding for this project."

The two-story building will also provide space for students to hold meetings, attend seminars and spend leisure time with friends.

"The facility will be state-of-the-art to do so many things we can't do in our current facility," said the Roosevelt School's Executive Director Greg Schmieg.

"This will mean a tremendous improvement in the quality of services for young people with disabilities not just from this area but across the state of Georgia," added Thurmond.

Students with disabilities who attend the school get hands-on job training and real world experience.

Student Council Representative Sean Byers said, "I thank God every day that I chose this place to come. They really do make dreams come true."

Thurmond says this new building will also make dreams come true for job seekers, "This will also have a huge economic impact for Meriwether County and surrounding counties. We will generate over 200 new jobs."

"Even though we are just building a building, it's more about the transformation and how we deliver services and who we can serve and it opens up a world of opportunities for us," added Schmieg.

Official construction will kick off at the start of next week and the brand new facility is planned to be complete by December 2010.

More than half of the 17 people killed when a tourist boat sank on a Branson lake were members of the same Indiana family, and they likely wouldn't have been on the ill-fated trip but for a ticket mix-up.
