Alleged Rapist Testifies

OPELIKA, AL (WXTX) - In a trial that has gripped East Alabama, the man accused of raping a 91-year-old Opelika woman took the stand in his own defense on Thursday. He testified the sex was consensual.

Forty-three-year-old Anthony Vines took the stand late this afternoon and testified he was invited to the victim's home. Vines says he's known Annie Hilyer for years because he did yard work for her and her late husband. He said he did have sex with her, but it was consensual and said she initiated the encounter.

"Ms. Hilyer asked me to come by and do some work for her on Sunday. I knocked on her door and she peeped out, saw it was me and let me in. A few minutes later she called me to the bedroom I went in and she was she was laying on the bed playing with her gown I asked her how old she was she said don't worry about it. She had me come sit on the bed where she was I sat on the bed and we started form there and she said something about how things are different now it used to be back then women picked older men, but now they pick younger men," Vines testified.

Annie Hilyer testified Vines broke into her home, and forcibly raped her. The doctor who performed an exam on Hilyer testified her injuries were consistent with what he termed a brutal rape.

Closing arguments began late Thursday afternoon. Fox 54 will let you know the verdict as soon as it is available.
