FORT BENNING, GA (WTVM) -  The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act is relocating the U.S. Armor Center from Fort Knox in Kentucky to Fort Benning.

Together, the Armor Center and Infantry Center are combining to form the Maneuver Center of Excellence.

In a ceremony Thursday, the Maneuver Center of Excellence was officially activated.

BRAC is a $3.5 billion investment for the Army and is expected to bring 30,000 people to the area.

Army officials say the first big wave of folks are expected to move here this time next year.

When everything is complete, Fort Benning will train more than half of all new soldiers entering the Army.

Federal law requires this move take place by September of 2011 and officials say they are right on track.
