COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The search for a man Columbus Police say is responsible for shooting his neighbor is over.

According to police reports, the events leading up to the Sunday morning shooting began the night before.

Witnesses tell police a verbal argument between 42-year-old David Oliver and 30-year-old Michael Smith started between their two homes off Morris Road after they had been drinking.

Columbus Police tell News Leader Nine, Smith was not happy with Oliver staying at his mother's house in lot 41. Around 10:30 Sunday morning Oliver and Smith met again outside their next door homes and a physical fight broke out.

That's when reports show Smith pulled out a handgun and shot at Oliver three or four times, hitting him in the leg, arm and back.

Police were called to the Lake Forest Mobile home park, where they sent Oliver to the Medical Center and began their search for Smith. Early Monday morning that search ended when Michael Smith called police to turn himself in.

After undergoing surgery, the Columbus Regional Medical Center confirms David Oliver is still in unsatisfactory condition.

Michael Smith is scheduled to appear in Recorder's Court Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock. He is facing aggravated assault charges and Columbus Police say he could be facing more charges once the investigation is complete.
