COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - News Leader 9 has confirmed, Columbus postmaster general, Jerry Schafer is under investigation for misusing government information.

Sam Montalvo of the Postal Inspector General Office said the investigation is ongoing and is not considered criminal, but we're told the status could change once presented to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

He added Schafer is under investigation because he has violated the U.S. Privacy Act.

Schafer has been placed on administrative leave without pay on Monday, October 26th.

Although Schafer sought voluntary retirement, that will not stop criminal charges from being brought against him if the investigation proves criminal.

News Leader 9 is following this story. We'll have the latest information as soon as it becomes available.
