COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - It's been one week since a Columbus man was shot several times by his nephew, and now he speaks out about what happened that Sunday morning. News Leader Nine has his story in this exclusive report.

"He's taken my life from me. I'm destroyed right now. I have no one to help me and I need help," said David Oliver.

For the first time since the shooting, David Oliver now has the chance to tell his side of the story, "When he turned around, he reached down in his pocket, pulled the gun out and started shooting me. I felt the bullet go in my chest and I thought it went in my heart and I said 'Michael, you killed me, you can stop now' and I collapsed because my back was broken from the bullet."

Oliver feels his nephew, 30 year old Michael Smith, was trying to kill him when he shot at him more than five times outside his Lake Forest Mobile Park home, "It was a senseless act. It was all an alcohol induced rage in him. He tried to murder me. He tried to kill me and he had that intent in him when he came over."

His injuries from the shooting make it difficult for Oliver to care for himself.

"There's no life left in me. I can't walk, it destroyed me on the inside," Oliver told News Leader Nine.

He says he just wants to restore a feeling of safety to himself and his family, "The big thing is, being in fear of my life and fear of my family's life and the fear that he'll get out of jail and come hurt his family or someone else. I want to feel safe. I want my family to feel safe. I want him to get help."

Michael Smith is still being held in the Muscogee County Jail. His bond has been set at $10,000 and there is no word yet on when he will appear in Superior Court.
