GA State Patrol collecting for Toys for Tots campaign

Press Release

State public safety officers join 2009 Toys for Tots campaign

(ATLANTA) – The Georgia State Patrol and officers with the Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division and Capitol Police Services Unit are teaming with the United States Marine Corps Reserve for the 2009 Toys for Tots program.

Colonel Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety, announced today that collection points for new, unwrapped toys are being established at all 48 Georgia State Patrol posts across the state.

Colonel Hitchens said the annual collection drive provides toys to needy children and the Georgia Department of Public Safety is on board to help the local communities.  "Many of our Department members have served in the Marine Corps, including myself, the deputy commissioner, and the commanding officer of the Georgia State Patrol Division, and know firsthand the impact Toys for Tots has on helping others," he said.

Collection boxes are being distributed to the 48 Georgia State Patrol posts across the state and toy donations may be made until the close of business Friday, December 11.  The toys donated should be new and unwrapped.

Toys may be dropped off at the GSP posts on weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Additional collections site are at the Georgia Department of Public Safety Headquarters on East Confederate Avenue in Atlanta and the Capitol Police Services office at 130 Memorial Drive near the Georgia State Capitol.

Last year, Corporal Crystal Griffin, Assistant Post Commander at GSP Milledgeville, initiated a toy collection effort among the patrol posts in central Georgia.  "Cpl. Griffin has expanded the collection effort this year to include all GSP posts," Colonel Hitchens said.  "Her efforts have already earned her Customer Service recognition from the Department of Public Safety and the Toys for Tots campaign is all about helping others."

The Commissioner noted that the toys collected at the Georgia State Patrol posts will stay in the local communities.  "This is about neighbors helping neighbors," he noted.
