COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The search continues for a pit bull that attacked and mauled a 12 year old Columbus girl.

She is in critical condition, fighting for her life, in an Atlanta hospital.

Muscogee County Animal Control spent the better part of Friday morning distributing flyers in and around Celia Drive.

The flyer contained a description of a dog that mauled the 12 year old girl Wednesday morning.

That dog is still on the loose, according to chief of special enforcement Drale Short.

"We're talking with people for two reasons. One, asking to see their animals, if they have animals, and two to make them aware of the problem, or situation that occurred, and the fact that this is the animal we're looking for and leaving them a flyer that has all the contact information on it so they can contact us," Short said.

Today, activity was at a minimum on Celia Drive as family members waited for word on the status of the 12 year old girl.

In the meantime, officials continued to search for the dog that attacked her.

Muscogee County Animal Control is relying on tips from neighbors.

"We have received a lot of tips on different animals that meet the description, but we have to be mindful that just because it meets the description, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's the dog. But we are actively searching for it," Short said.

As for the 12 year old, she is still listed in critical condition tonight at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. Her grandparents, who did not wish to go on camera, instead told News Leader Nine, "She's hanging on."
