COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - News Leader Nine has confirmed a suspicious package was found Thursday on Fort Benning and is currently being investigated.

The Army Times reports the package contained 20 hollow-point bullets and a note threatening an incident similar to what happened on November 5th at Fort Hood, Texas.

Major Nidal Hasan is accused opening fire and killing 13 in an attack on that military installation.

The package, found Thursday, was also the day General David Patraeus was in Columbus as a distinguished guest for an OCS graduation.

Fort Benning released the following statement:

"A suspicious package and note were found Thursday morning at a motor pool on Fort Benning by a Soldier.  The Soldier notified his NCO who alerted 911.  The area was quickly and safely secured without incident.

As is normal in these types of incidents, a criminal investigation is under way to determine if this is a viable threat against Fort Benning.  Appropriate force protection measures are in place to protect Fort Benning and the surrounding community."
