COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - A family man, a pastor and former Muscogee County School Board member, Joseph Roberson is known by most as a public servant who genuinely cared about people.  His life ended Saturday in a traffic accident near Savannah, GA.  Today, those who knew him best are trying to cope with his untimely death.

"He was a dear friend and mentor to me so hearing the news was shocking and of course a tragic situation, " says Reverend Denise Walton. She succeeded Roberson as Pastor of South Columbus United Methodist Church. His picture hangs on the wall along with his predecessors. Walton remembers how Roberson revitalized the church.

"He was brought in to help grow the church and to make the church to become a significant part of the community. He grew it from 45 persons to 700 member congregation that it is today," added Walton.

Earnestine Campbell was one of those members to join under Roberson's leadership. "He always had the gospel before him. He had a word from God for everyone. He was a strong prophet too, what he said would come to pass. I remember that as his walk and he loved his family. They were his pride and joy," says Campbell.

For 15 years, Roberson served as Pastor of South Columbus UMC helping to start a day care and after school program. He also served one term on the Muscogee County School Board. He and Pat Hugley Green were both elected in 2004.

"One thing for certain and you probably will hear it unequivocally over and over again; Reverend Roberson truly cared about people that was a primary focus and concern that he exemplified in every decision.
