COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Big bucks may be on the way to keep Alabama officers safe. Senator Richard Shelby says a conference committee approved a measure to set aside $30 million to buy new bulletproof vests. It's a measure Lieutenant Heath Taylor says will be a step in the right direction.
"It would be a tremendous help to our area of the country. Certainly, we can use all the funding we can get for things like this," says Taylor.
The bill also includes critical funding to upgrade technology, in-car computers, cameras and communications systems for officers. Other departments slated to get money are drug courts, the FBI and forensic labs. The proposal is subject to senate approval.
