QUITMAN COUNTY, GA (WTVM) – Quitman County deputies say early Saturday morning  they made several arrests while they were conducting driver's license and sobriety checks on U. S. Highway 82 in Georgetown, GA.

Around 12:00 a.m. deputies say they smelled a strong odor in a 2004 Honda Accord with four men inside. Authorities searched the vehicle and found three plastic bags containing ecstasy pills.

Deputies charged 18-year-old Jacob Riley Benford of Ellaville, GA, Lewis Chad Landress, age 21, of Ellaville, GA, Nicholas Charles Culp, age 19, of Panama City, FL, and John Kriston Savage, age 18, of Americus, GA with one count each of unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

"Ecstasy has gotten to be very common among adolescents in the past few years. They don't realize just how dangerous and destructive this drug can be," said Chief Deputy Eddie Ingram.

Authorities add, the pills were being transported to Panama City, Florida from a location in North Georgia. It's believed their charges could be upgraded to trafficking once the investigation is complete.

"We've arrested 293 individuals since January 1st and the majority of those arrests are for illegal drugs," said Sheriff Steve Newton.
