Georgia Department of Public Safety collects toys

Press Release

ATLANTA, GA – The Georgia Department of Public Safety reported today that more than 5,000 toys were collected  for Toys for Tots at DPS locations across the state this year.  Colonel Bill Hitchens, Commissioner of the Department, said toys are still be received in some areas but as of noon Monday there had been 5,273 toys collected statewide.

"This was a tremendous effort to make Christmas brighter for needy children in Georgia," Colonel Hitchens said.  "From across Georgia came stories of people stepping up to help."

Toys collected at the local Georgia State Patrol posts and the main DPS Headquarters in Atlanta will be distributed by the United States Marine Corps Reserve. "This was the first year our department partnered with Toys for Tots statewide and the number of toys collected exceeded every goal we set - several times over," the Commissioner noted.

The most toys reported by one location came from the Georgia State Patrol post in Swainsboro where 1,084 toys were donated that included seven boxes from a Saturday toy drive at the local Wal-Mart.  In Madison, a local Girl Scout Brownie troop decided to donate toys to the Toys for Tots campaign rather than give gifts among themselves this year. Their toy donations filled the trunk of a passenger car.

"On behalf of everyone at the Georgia Department of Public Safety, I send a huge ‘thank you' for the generosity of everyone who contributed to help children this holiday season," Colonel Hitchens said. The toy drive began November 14 and ended this past Friday.
