St. Francis gives "Stockings for Seniors"

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - Some local organizations have been out shopping for the less fortunate this holiday season. Instead of thinking just about kids for Christmas, they are giving back to some deserving parents.

Every year organizations collect toys around the holidays to give presents to some kids that may not have any otherwise.

The Executive Director of the House of Mercy, Bobby Harris told News Leader Nine, "512 children received toys this year. Our adults will receive a gift this year. We are asking the community to join with us so we can put smiles on their faces as well."

St. Francis Hospital is working to meet those needs by bringing gifts to area shelters. "Stockings for Seniors" volunteer Robert Holt said, "We collect things and put in bags for low to no-income seniors. We deliver to four places: the House of Mercy, The Stewart Community Home, Columbus Gardens and DFACS of Russell County."

Holt understands adults in need are sometimes looked over for gifts, "They appreciate Christmas as much as the children do and they get neglected this time of year so it's our way of giving back to them also."

It may not be new bikes and dolls, but the "Stockings for Seniors" contain much needed items.

Harris said, "Some of the adults need shaving equipment, coats, underwear and shirts."

"We've got a lot of necessity things they normally can't afford and we also throw in some gifts," Holt said.

Harris told News Leader Nine everyone at the shelter will have a merrier Christmas because of this donation, "We're happy to know they're concerned about our less fortunate residents in this community by aiding and helping them."
