COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  Columbus Police are investigating a shooting at an apartment complex on the city's south side.

Investigators say 26-year-old Rodney McCarter was shot in the parking lot of the Wade Street Apartments around 5:15 PM Saturday.

McCarter tells police he was approached by a man who asked him if he wanted to buy drugs. When he told the man "No" and turned to walk away, McCarter says the gunman pulled the trigger on a small caliber handgun.

Investigators say the bullet hit McCarter in the buttocks and went into his abdomen. They say his injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

When officers got the call to respond to the shooting, they found McCarter lying on the ground.

He is being treated at the Columbus Regional Medical Center.

Investigators describe the gunman as an African American man in his early to mid twenties, around 6'2", with a dark complexion, between 165 and 175 lbs.

Anyone with information on the case should call the Columbus Police Department's Robbery and Assault Division at 706-653-3400.
