EUFAULA, AL (WTVM) -  The Commander of the Eufaula Police Department's Narcotics Division is in trouble with the law after investigators say thousands of dollars turned up missing from the department.

Thirty-seven-year-old Lieutenant Stephen Hanners is charged with theft of property first degree.

Officials in the department say the theft involves money that had been seized along with other funds that had been forfeited.

Around $20,000 was taken, according to police.

Steve Hanners resigned from his position with the department before he was charged.

He is out of jail on bond.

Hanners tells WTVM he has no comment on the case.

The investigation is still ongoing by Eufaula Police and the Alabama Attorney General's Office.
