COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - The economy is taking a toll on local crime-fighting efforts.
Columbus Police Chief Ricky Boren confirms to News Leader 9 that the GBI Crime Lab located in the city is now scheduled to close in the spring.
The Chief says it's due to budget shortfalls at the state level.
Police officers rely on the lab for quick forensic testing.
That means local law enforcement will have to take evidence to labs in Macon or Atlanta for testing.
