QUITMAN COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -  A Georgetown, Georgia man is behind bars after authorities say he barricaded himself inside a home with an infant hostage.

Twenty-one-year old Derrick Thomas has been charged with simple battery, kidnapping and disorderly conduct.

Officials with the Quitman County Sheriff's Department say Thomas attacked several of his neighbors and family members on New Year's Eve outside a home on Club Road.

When deputies arrived on the scene, they say Thomas grabbed his newborn niece and barricaded himself the house to avoid capture. That's when police found out there were other young children inside the home with him as well.

Police started yelling for him to give the baby back but they say he didn't listen and started holding the child more carelessly.

When Thomas finally handed the newborn back to his sister through the door, police lunged at him and after a brief struggle with deputies, he was taken into custody.

Police say Thomas continued acting belligerent for several hours after his arrest and during his first court appearance, kicking the inside of the patrol car and holding cell.

Thomas is being held in the Miller County Jail.
