Columbus Student Sexually Assaulted; Man on the Loose

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  Officials in the Columbus Police Department's Sex Crimes Unit say a student at East Columbus Magnet Academy was walking alone to school Wednesday morning when she was kidnapped by a stranger, taken to a nearby park and sexually assaulted.

The Muscogee County School District released this statement:

"An East Columbus Middle School student was reportedly abducted by an unidentified male while she was walking to school this morning. The student is safe now and school security officers and the Columbus Police Department are investigating…but we want the community to be aware and on the look-out."

The principal, Kevin Scott, says the student was about a mile away from school grounds at the time of the incident.

"As a school district and the media, we need to come together to help our parents and to make our community safer for our children, especially the children that walk to school. Anybody can be driving up and down the streets, trying to talk to or pick up any of our children. We need to let children and parents know the best thing they can do is talk to their children," he said.

So far, an arrest has not been made.

Columbus Police have released a detailed description of the suspect and his car.

He is described as a black man in his early 20s, slender, clean shaven with a close haircut, between 5'11" and 6' tall.

He was last seen wearing darks jeans, white tennis shoes and black and red layered shirts.

His car is a gold or tan Dodge Durango or similar model with a black interior in good shape.  If you see this man, please call 9-11.

Investigators with the Columbus Police Department say the child was released after the incident and returned to her parents.

Police and school district officials are asking parents to take caution their children when they walk to school or the bus and make them aware of safety precautions if someone should attempt to approach them or entice them into a car.
