Attempted Abduction of Columbus Student

COLUMBUS, GA (WXTX) -  Columbus Police are investigating the attempted abduction of an 11-year-old girl.

The incident happened Friday morning near Goodwin and Wright Drive off Buena Vista Road.

According to investigators, the child was walking alone to her school, Lonnie Jackson Academy, when a black man in his early twenties wearing a black skull cap and jacket and driving a green SUV pulled up beside her and tried to convince her to get in the car.

Police say the little girl told him "No," took off running and found a police officer.

This comes on the heels of the abduction and sexual assault of a 12-year-old student at East Columbus Magnet Academy.

Officials in the Sex Crimes Unit say she was walking alone to school Wednesday morning when she was abducted at gunpoint by a black man in his twenties, taken to a park and sexually assaulted before being released. The suspect's vehicle in that case is described as a gold or tan Dodge Durango or similar model.

At this point, Columbus detectives won't say if the two incidents are related. They note the vehicle and description of the suspect are different but they are actively working both cases.

The Muscogee County School District sent out this press release:

This is a very important and urgent safety message for all parents and employees of the Muscogee County School District. We want to inform you that Columbus Police and MCSD security are investigating at least two incident reports that involves a stranger or unidentified male(s) who reportedly attempted to abduct or entice a child to enter his vehicle before school. The latest incident occurred this morning, reported by a child who attends Lonnie Jackson Academy who was walking to school. The child is safe. She reportedly ran away from the stranger, was not injured, and reported the incident to police and school administrators. This is the second report this week involving a male who attempted to abduct or entice a child to get in a vehicle. We want you to be aware and to help take precaution, especially if a child walks to school. Please take this time to talk to your child about stranger danger, and encourage your child to report if someone approaches him or her immediately. We also encourage parents to not allow their child to walk to or from school unsupervised. Thank you for your help and support to make sure all of our children are safe. We will continue to keep you informed about important safety concerns as safety is priority.
