COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) - UPDATE: A water tank overflowed overnight dumping tons of water onto several roads including Buena Vista Road.

The Columbus Fire Department says it happened around 2:15 Tuesday morning during a routine maintenance.  The tower is located beside a home on Parkhill Drive.  City crews dumped sand and salt on Parkhill and closed the road at both ends, Higgs Drive and Upland Way.

One lane on Buena Vista Road, east bound toward Schatulga Road is also blocked off.  Barricades have been placed on the scene to ensure drivers are safe.

The main concern, according to Lieutenant Chris Rebidue, is the possibility of the water freezing on the road.  Rebidue also says the tank holds about a million gallons of water.  The overflow reportedly spilled into the city sewage.

The cause of the problem is still undetermined. Rebidue says he's not sure if the alarm sounded as it should when water starts to spillover from the water tank.

No one was injured.
